Blog 1 Capstone Project Update
It is the second week of capstone and we have decided that the beach wheelchair will be the project that we will work on for this semester. HandiCapable people enjoy going to the beach but cannot maneuver with ease in the sand. There are beach wheelchairs available for them but are way too expensive and are too bulky to carry in a vehicle. A solution to this problem is to make a wheelbase for the wheelchair that modifies its capabilities. The vision is a plastic base frame with balloon wheels that can attach a standard wheelchair and harness it so it can easily be pushed around on sandy terrains. This can potentially increase the quality of life of a person by enjoying the beach scenery without having to spend thousands of dollars on a beach wheelchair.
Individuals with mobility impairments face significant challenges in accessing sandy beach environments due to the limitations of standard wheelchairs designed for solid surfaces. This project aims to address the unique obstacles presented by beach terrains, focusing on enhancing accessibility for individuals unable to walk. Solving the accessibility challenges at sandy beaches will significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with mobility impairments, allowing them to enjoy recreational activities in these environments. The impact extends beyond mere physical accessibility, promoting a sense of inclusivity and the opportunity for individuals to connect with nature. The goals of the project include developing a kit that will attach to an existing wheelchair that effectively addresses mobility challenges, enhances traction on sandy terrain, facilitates interaction with water, and incorporates a lightweight design. Technical research and analysis will ensure a balance between sturdiness and ease of use. The success of the design will be measured through user feedback, testing, and the project's ability to overcome the limitations faced by individuals with mobility impairments at the beach. Design documentation and technical analysis will contribute to the evaluation of the prototype's effectiveness. Metrics include improved ease of movement on the sand, stability near water, and positive user experiences. This project aims to create a prototype that will provide a safe, resistant, and uncomplicated experience, aligning with course requirements and offering a tangible solution to a real-world problem.
The main obstacles that could hinder our development and conceptualization of a solution include the attachment mechanism, material durability, balance and weight, and wheel performance. The attachment mechanism is the most critical; if the wheelchair is not properly secured to the frame, it may lead to accidents and injuries. Thus, an attachment must be designed to be both secure and easy to use, allowing any standard wheelchair, without the need of customizing the mechanism to a specific model of wheelchair, to be fastened to the frame without compromising safety. The durability of the materials is the second most critical factor, as materials must be chosen for the plastic base frame that are strong enough to withstand exposure to the elements, uneven sandy terrains, and the stresses of use. It must be ensured that the frame is capable of supporting the combined weight of the wheelchair and the occupant, while preventing tipping and maintaining balance, especially since the wheel bases intended use will be on an uneven terrain like sand. Finally, the appropriate balloon wheels must be selected; they should be able to safely operate under the weight of the occupant, wheelchair, and frame, as well as to provide sufficient enough flotation and traction on sand without getting stuck or making propulsion difficult.
